In my studio, listening to The Fragile from Nine Inch Nails for the zillionth time. I honestly cannot think of an album that tells as convincing of a story as this one. You could mute the lyrics, and just listen to the music, or mute the music, and just read the lyrics, and both parts would have perfectly corroborating accounts: Holy shit this guy is close to the edge. I miss this in popular music (Freak out as much as you like, but NIN had as much radio airplay and MTV presence as anyone else). Its not at all about the need for music to be as heavy and dark as this, either. In fact, the story being told is quite a tragic one when you realize its based on a true story. What I miss is the sincerity, and the ability to convey it in a such 360 degree fashion. Make it as uplifting as you want, as sad as you want, but make it yours. Convince me its a part of the core of your being. Music that does that is still out there, but it does sadden me a bit that there is seemingly very little room for that in popular music anymore. I hope the young ones still get curious and explore. So, now I have to ask. What album, that was widely accessible, did this for you?
