In my volunteer day job I get to meet many amazing and inspirational people - and I can honestly say that I do what I do purely for the smiles. Today I went along with World WIZO President Tova Ben-Dov to WIZO Beit Porge, a day care centre in the ‘Shkunat Hatikva’ part of Tel Aviv, where so many of the toddlers are from disadvantaged backgrounds and for them Beit Porge is a warm home. There, where we met with British Ambassadors wife Celia Leaberry Gould and British ex-pat Chloe Sandler Backner of the Tel Aviv Mothers Make a Difference organization. These two enthusiastic and altruistic young mums set up ‘Tel Aviv Mothers Make A Difference’ to provide needy mothers with good quality, previously loved nursery items, toys and clothes that have been donated so that they can be distributed to impoverished mums and families in need. As Celia explained, “We do not raise funds, we are not into that, but impoverished mums, all mums irrespective of race, creed or religion, deserve to have things for their babies. We can provide them.” Edna, the dedicated manager of the Beit Forge day care centre was delighted to receive two big bags full of toddler clothes and toys. I was truly moved by this and immediately thought of the countless mums that come through WIZO’s doors who are so desperately in need – and who can only dream of having lovely things for their babies – and why shouldn’t they? As Celia says, all mums deserve this. I take my hat off to these two women for their brilliant and life-enhancing initiative, and through WIZO’s network of day care centres and battered women’s shelters, we can certainly help the Tel Aviv Mothers bring smiles to mums in Israel. Regrettably, there is no shortage of struggling mums in Israel but thankfully, there is WIZO in their lives. We will be pleased to make the connection .
