In one of my daily trawls through the British Newspaper Archive, I came across yet another gem..... The sub-headline Precautions against burial alive inevitably attracted my attention. Well, why wouldnt it? :) This was reporting the will of a lady in the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette on 8 December 1923. After making numerous bequests to friends and servants, she inserted a paragraph insisting that to ensure that death had taken place and she wasnt buried alive a medical practitioner should sever an artery before burial! It sounds like the stuff of Hammer Horror films, doesnt it? Fear of being buried alive is a very old one but I wasnt aware that it still existed in the 20th century. She must have been a tad eccentric, I imagine.
