In recent days, some persons have taken exception to my characterization of Islam as misogynistic. They say its unfair of me to single out Islam. (I dont.) They say I should cite the misogyny which is present also in the religions of Hinduism, Judaism, and Christianity. (I do.) They say I demonstrate intolerance toward Islam. (No, I simply disagree with it and oppose it — is that not allowed?) By way of response, I tell them they are welcome to express their dissenting views on my page. I tell them that if they feel Im doing a disservice to their religion, or that Im misrepresenting it, they are certainly free to offer a counter perspective. So what, then, do these people do? Do they take me up on my offer? No. In a grand demonstration of their (version of) tolerance, they unfriend me. They pull the plug on dialogue. They remove themselves from my online family. Meanwhile, it never occurs to them that while I was busy writing about patriarchal religion on my own Facebook page, they were doing likewise on their page. And even as I strongly disagreed with their point of view, not once did I go to their page to write rebuttals against them. Not once did I take them to task or accuse them of intolerance. And not once did I seek to end my online association with them. Apparently its perfectly acceptable for believers to write paeans to their beloved doctrines, but woe be unto the agnostics, humanists, and atheists who do likewise, for verily I say unto you, that ye will be labeled intolerant bigots.
