In response to the recent events in Gaza SpartaKi would like to hear from anyone interested in collaborating in a production of Letters from Area C by Jim Aitken, to raise money for Medical Aid for Palestine. This is a completely non funded production and everyone is giving their time and skills free to raise funds for this charity. We are primarily looking for performers at this stage, however if this is an issue you too are passionate about and you would like to be involved please contact us at lettersfromareac@gmail detailing with which aspect of the production you would like to assist and/or any skills/experience you wish to donate to the project. We are open to any suggestions! Area C is a land – like many lands today- where people have to keep going in the face of extreme hardship. For ordinary people living in such a situation their lives become extraordinary ones and show the profound depths some people discover they have in order to survive and keep hope. An uplifting and inspiring example of the triumph of humanity and dignity over adversity and oppression, the play tells story of two sisters, Laila and Hanin and two prisoners Jamal (Hanin’s husband) and Yusuf (a poet and activist). While Jamal and Yusuf talk politics – and draw maps – in their prison cell, Leila, Hanin’s older sister, takes it upon herself to do whatever she can to ease her sister’s suffering and bring her a semblance of hope. She devises a plan to pass letters between her sister and Jamal while also looking after her sister’s children as Hanin tries to improve the conditions of her bomb damaged home. Produced by SpartaKi and directed by Helen Marie O’Malley Letters from Area C will be a multimedia production including music and film and featuring Nabil Shaban and Ghazi Hussein. We are currently sourcing a venue but hope to do 2-3 performances around the middle of November. Auditions and rehearsals will be in Edinburgh. Provisional audition dates are 7, 14 and 21 September with rehearsals thereafter based on availability. We are sorry but as this is an unfunded charity production we cannot meet any expenses and appreciate this may restrict responses to Edinburgh-based collaborators only. CASTING BREAKDOWN We are looking for performers of Middle Eastern appearance for the following roles: HANIN – Late 30s, wife of Jamal and mother of their two children. She has resolute expression due to her circumstances, however grief can break through and passion, too, especially in relation to the letters to and from Jamal. She also shows a comical side when Laila, raises her hopes and engages her in struggle. LAILA – Hanin’s older sister, mid to late 40s, the widow of Salah, killed by a sniper’s bullet some years ago. She is also resolute and always concerned, sometimes a bit on edge due to the way she feels responsible for Hanin. She is tremendously supportive, always busy, and finds purpose through Hanin’s situation. She can also lighten up and show a passionate disregard for everything through comedy. JAMAL – Hanin’s imprisoned husband, late 30s or early 40s. He is a politically active individual who is in prison for organising a demonstration that was deemed illegal. He is highly motivated and feels responsible for his family but also displays a sense of humour. This is an unpaid fund raising production, any and all profits will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestine. We hope to develop the piece further with a view to approaching other venues, festivals and interested organisations for a longer run, and to this end will be inviting potential funders and supporters to this production. Anyone involved at this initial stage would automatically have first refusal on any future paid opportunities. Please send resumes and a recent photo (does not have to be professional headshot) to lettersfromareac@gmail. Looking forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Karen Douglas (Artistic Director SpartaKi) Producer Letters from Area C __._,_.___
