In response to yesterdays post, What can you do with playdough and ceramic tile?, some of the children initiated a play-based math lesson. They made cookies and counted them repeatedly, each time adding just one more and recounting. At this point in development, children practice one-to-one correspondence, creating opportunities for addition and subtraction, and applying numbers and counting to daily life. It is not important that the sequence or the answer is incorrect (ie. 1-2-3-4-5-8-10). What is important is that young children use critical thinking skills and imagination to form a problem and creatively solve (even incorrectly) a mathematical question. As it is in art, its the process that counts, not the product!
