In the 1960s, Burbank, California, was so white that, at night, you could project a movie on it. And the only black people a teenager like me knew were characters on Amos and Andy or I Spy. Oh, we had seen them on the news being chased by police dogs and hosed down in Alabama for not following orders. In 1966, however, the first little crack in my sheltered consciousness opened up when I heard from a song that 13-year-old Janis Ian had written. It brought racism right to everyones front door.
