In the 5 years Ive been reviewing music for The Great Unknowns - TopicsExpress

In the 5 years Ive been reviewing music for The Great Unknowns Presents and KGUP 106.5FM The Emerge Radio Networks, Ive only had one person get really offended by my rejection letter. This morning was number 2. Ive rejected hundreds, if not thousands of song submissions over the years. I dont like it, but its part of the business Im in. Were in the business of subjective opinions, but its also my job to have a good ear, otherwise I wouldnt be good at what I do. When selecting songs for KGUP, its not based on what I personally like. Its based on what will retain the stations listeners. My listeners are my No 1 priority. Even though I make the decisions, it has nothing to do with me personally. Its my duty as Program Director and Station Manager to play songs that will flow from one song to the next. The other criteria that I look for is relevancy. Is the song modern enough for the station? Will it have longevity? Will someone turn off the station because the flow isnt right? These are all things I consider when adding a new song. You cannot go from 70s glam rock to 2013 post-modern rock. IT DOES NOT WORK! However, when I try to explain this to a certain person in question, no matter what, that person is offended. I personally dont care how famous your producer is. If it doesnt fit our format, its not going on the air. So, if you happen to read or hear a certain someone talk trash about a punk nose kid operating a radio station called KGUP 106.5FM, let me know about it. Honestly, I hope he trashes the station. It will only result in more listeners on my end. My advice to any artist submitting to my station or any station is to listen to the station youre submitting to it. If you send a blind submission, be prepared to get rejected. Radio stations want proactive artists. They want to see you actively promoting the station. They want to see engagement by the artist telling their fans to listen to KGUP or the station youre on. Never submit it and forget it. That mentality will get your removed from rotation very quickly. Station managers want to get phone calls, emails, and Tweets from people requesting your songs. They want to see the occasional Thank you. If there is complete silence on your part and your music is just okay, guess what? Your song will get taken off the air. If there is absolutely no benefit for your song to be on the air, it will get taken off of rotation. If its too much work to monitor and maintain your social media presence, its important to have a manager or publicist that can do it for you.
