In the Old Testament, the expression ‘the glory of God’ is used in two ways. It refers both to the self-revealed character of God, and also to a visible revelation of God’s presence. This means that God’s glory shows people both where God is and what he is like. Glory is the outward manifestation of God’s absolute holiness. God’s glory: In the New Testament, these aspects of God’s glory were perfectly fulfilled in Christ. He is both the complete self-revelation of God’s character and also the clearest revelation of God’s presence. The word ‘glory’ normally describes Jesus’ revelation of God’s nature by grace and miracles. It adds to the Old Testament the sense of a demonstration of beautiful perfection and a display of magnificent power. God’s glory seen in Jesus shows the Father’s splendid excellence and the full extent of his authority and power. Since Pentecost, it has been the Church’s function to reveal God’s great glory in and to the world. This means that we are meant to be showing God’s holy character to the world, to be being seen by the world as the place where God lives, and to be demonstrating God’s regal authority and power. It is obvious that we can glorify God only by being full of the presence of God— and that is the work of the Spirit. When we pray for God’s glory to be seen, we are asking for the world to see his holiness, grace and power—and they see that in us through the Spirit’s work. As he brings God’s presence to us, so God is glorified in the world through us.
