In the complex field of democratic politics, the choice that the electorate face is always of assessing the pros and cons to identify the lesser evil. If I were to choose between those who rob the people of this country while doing something tangible for them in return versus those who wouldt mind selling the country wholesale and make us subservient to a foreign power for another taste of political (and economic) power, I would choose the former without blinking an eye. The reason our former leaders, Mrs. Kumaratunga and Mr. Wickramasinghe (who are behind our new candidate for leadership, Mr. Sirisena, and will for sure be the local handlers of the frontman), failed to achieve what President Rajapaksa has achieved in a decade is because they did not have the political conviction and will to go against the financial mafia of the West who are hell bent on keeping smaller nations subservient and under their control. True, they may have their own reasons for it, perhaps the circumstances favored President Rajapaksa, but as they say, the way always follows the will, and they never had the will to push ahead, so they never got anywhere. This is where President Rajapaksas bold and brave decisions trump all our former leaders whos popularity has eroded among the masses (and with very good reason) that they need to a front man to get back into power, which is an utterly shameless strategy. If Mr. Sirisena was a real man who can stand up on his own, as we should expect of all our Presidents, he would have resigned long ago from his high office and come forward with a comprehensive vision for what he plans to do for the country, without trying his luck by appealing to the vulnerable emotions of the public, and placing the countrys future path in grave danger. The people will have to ask whether we want such a person to lead this country at such a crucial phase of our history. Five years ago the opposition burned itself by choosing a vengeful military commander who appreciated a shot at his rival but didnt quite appreciate being handled as the common candidate, so this time the least we can do is give the common opposition due credit for learning from their past mistakes. Only those impulsive and myopic with no sense of historical direction will thrust our motherland back into the camp of the dyeing West. The world has moved on, Let us hope we shall too.
