In the early 70s I began teaching in the East End of London - not really the East End, but full of East Enders moving east. There was a little ginger haired kid there who I got to know; he left and I carried on. He had musical aspirations and played in a band with some other kids from school. I bumped into him on occasions, probably in the Britannia after a West Ham game, and we exchanged the usual pleasantries. But it was still a surprise when one morning in 1983 a postcard and a pile of posters arrived. Hed put out a solo album - could I distribute the posters in school. I went to see him play many, many times in the next few years. But then I didnt see him play for many, many years. Until last night when I went to a show at the Guildhall in Southampton. An evening full of stories, country-punk-folk, and, despite a heavy head cold, empassioned political exhortations. 30 years (and 40 years) on I salute you Stephen William Bragg.
