In the fourteenth century the English developed a method of warfare known as the chevauchee, this involved an army advancing through enemy territory on a twenty mile front destroying everything in its path, through the destruction of property and seizure of goods and hostages they forced the enemy into confrontation or through bankruptcy rendered them incapable of resistance. In the twentieth century the American airforce developed a similar tactic, but due to a slight misunderstanding of the English language they called it a tactical surgical strike!
