In the last 10 months of Joe Bells life, the 95-year-old World War - TopicsExpress

In the last 10 months of Joe Bells life, the 95-year-old World War II veteran became a viral video star, was named grand marshal of a local Fourth of July parade and was honored with his own baseball trading card by the San Jose Giants. Bell, who just a month ago was still riding his bike to the Central YMCA to swim, died Thursday at his home in San Joses Rose Garden neighborhood. His heart finally gave out, his family said. He became an overnight celebrity in March after a video by this newspaper captured him standing outside his home in his Army uniform cheering on runners during an event named for fallen Army Ranger and football star Pat Tillman. One-by-one, the runners began to veer off the course to shake Bells hand and thank him for his military service.
