In the last 365 days, I have poured over so many saree images I can no longer count. I remember only a few. Why is that? Because they do something. They say something. They stretch the very narrative of the whole 6/9 yards. Many of you may not know this because you are new to this whole Sadee Saree ride. At one point, I came pretty close to shutting down this page. It just didnt seem worth it. I was getting slammed by the very women I had imagined were my friends. I was being slammed for my Arm Crook, I was being openly called a Hitler meets Mao on a saree long march. I kept those words, that still sting where they were meant to. I soldiered on. I kept experimenting with my sarees. From Arm Crooks to contrasts, I went on a what shall I try next ride. When I look back I am glad I did not give up. Because giving up is oh so easy. This trying to adjust to someone elses imagined standard of what is right. Of trying to fit in. Of pulling the same my-arm-got-fractured saree pose. That too is posing by the way. Last night, I saw a saree image that took obvious risks when it came to the very issue of styling. If it was a 6 foot reed thin model on a ramp I am confident many of us would have applauded. There are 100s of saree images on Facebook these days, that one image stood out. I expected it - that some would like it, others would completely hate it. Statistically speaking if 3 people like you, 9 are going to hate you. Thats life. Just get used to it. I posted the image without permission. The image belongs to Parama Ghosh. I have just looked at the comments and I am going to conclude this post with Sumana Roys words. It was Sumana who introduced me to Parama and both girls have, over the time I have known them virtually, bowled me with their saree style. I dont think they ever need to adjust it to suit anyone. As Sumana says: I dont think Parama needs to make a style statement. Having followed her saree wearing moods for the last two years now, I can only say that she brings her individuality to everything she does (and wears). She can turn the seemingly ordinary into a thing of wonder with a minor tweak here or a spark of innovation there. I love what she has done here. Parama will excuse my saying this, I know, and so I will - like most of us, Parama doesnt have washboard abs, and yet by pulling the pallu through the jacket-blouse, she does body types like hers (and mine) a great favour. I know I wouldnt be able to carry off this look, but when someone does it so well and so courageously (and yet unselfconsciously), I can only show my admiration. Bravo, girl.
