In the last fortnight India lost theatre original Veenapani Chawla, actors Deven Varma, & Sadashiv Amrapurkar, historian Tapan Raychaudhuri and so many others who I may not have known about or cant seem to remember while writing this. While I saw relevant tributes, none in a mainstream space done evocatively enough for a person who may have no idea of their lasting contributions. It is the first thing that I loved about the British papers while living in London. A few pages always dedicated to beautifully penned obituaries, which gave a sense of a life without eulogising or turning a blind eye. I am sure that for all the people mentioned above, touching personal tributes poured in, but did they make it to a space where you and I could access it from. I dont know.I was thinking about how a nation which doesnt honour its living is quite unlikely to honor their passing on too. And if you cant do it, ask those who knew. This tribute of Robin Williams done by friend and fellow comedian Billy Crystal is just perfectly pitched. A touch of humour, a shared remembrance, a context in which his contributions will be remembered and then handing over to the talent himself as the lights go out. All in 5 minutes or so, for those who dont have time.Watch https://youtube/watch?v=jUHV703ZRys
