In the morning of the 14th of July 2013, the VPSC and the VAFF - TopicsExpress

In the morning of the 14th of July 2013, the VPSC and the VAFF spent the morning shopping and exploring some of the traditional sights of the old and the new Guangzhou (again). In the afternoon, the VPSC and the VAFF travelled to the Olympic Stadium to continue it’s Asian football challenge (in a round robin format) in 38 degrees and 75% humidity. To further the Good Will, that had already been spread the VPSC puts it’s hand up to play the Guangzhou provincial ladies team who were very talented indeed. The VPSC were able to navigate a tricky tie, played in a fair play spirit, with a 2-0 victory over the ladies however they displayed excellent technique, solid formation and quality teamwork throughout. Adam Husseini grabbed a clinical brace. The VAFF then played the Vancouver Soccer Association winning 3-0 in another convincing display and they then backed up against a local youth academy team with another empathetic win. Hiep Hip Hooray scoring a hatrick in the process. The VPSC then played the local youth academy team who also proved a handful and nearly nipped a point going down narrowly 2-1 (with Tass playing their striker in beautifully from his right back position) – that set up an enticing match up with the VAFF in the final. Detective Supt Gerard Ryan (Absolutely no relation to Steven GERARD) made his international debut against a 12 year old right back who fell over laughing as the Supt tried to adjust his body to receive his first path – falling flat on his face on the adjoining running track! (No lies – I promise) Having said that, the Supt is adamant that he would have performed to an acceptable level if Coops had only given him the ball. With an average age within the VAFF team of 25 against the VPSCs’ average of age 45 we were definitely up against it. However, pulling on the history and pride of our mighty club the VPSC put in a superb performance scraping through 1-0 in a very challenging game of football. It should be said that the VAFF have been an absolute pleasure to travel and socialize with though I must admit, it was great to beat them against the odds (again)!!! With Adam scoring another cracker. At the completion of the tournament we headed back to the Chateau Star River hotel for a quick shower and freshen up before liaising with the AFP SLO, Bill Polly and Tim the DFAT representative at the local McCawleys’ pub for a couple of quiet ones and the presentation of $2880.00 to Hopeful Hearts – a wonderful charity saving the lives’ of Chinese children through life saving heart operations. It was also an absolute pleasure spending our final evening with the VAFF, AFP and DFAT celebrating taking our relationship with the Chinese LEAs and people to the next level! All in all, another wonderful chapter in the history of the VPSC and its’ Good Will concept. Stay tuned for further updates. Tomorrow we head off to see the Great WALL! Check out the photos and stay tuned!
