In the news this week is the story that lions are facing extinction in West Africa. Only around 400 lions are estimated to remain, occupying just 1.1% of their historic range. Loss of habitat to agriculture, poaching of their prey for bushmeat, and retaliatory killing by herdsmen are all contributing to this shocking decline. West Africas population is over 300 million, and currently on course to double within 35 years.
