In the past year I was introduced to the D&DNext playtest and to Pathfinder. It is very interesting to me to see the fundamental differences in the two systems and with quite a bit of game experience behind me I have a theory that games are really built into 2 categories. One is the Pathfinder, 4th, 3.5 style systems that are all about the fiddly bits. Having massive amounts of options to customize your character to the umpteenth degree. These games offer so many ways to tweak your character it can be staggering. They also seem to encourage a large amount of min maxing. The second type are the rules lite games. These games dont offer as many mechanical variations to characters but the overall concepts are more vague. These systems seem to focus more on the experience of the game and less on the mechanical aspects. Neither of these styles are bad, and Im not making judgement calls just to be clear. Just an observation Ive noticed. WHat is your style?
