In the postmodern bid to create “gender equality” by defying biblically rooted social norms for gender, it is creating men and women whose identities are defined by confusion and hopelessness. The Western culture has taught men that they should not be characterized by values such as honor and chivalry, and it has taught women not to delight in such qualities. Even the church is facing resistance to calls for biblical masculinity and femininity, due in large part to the evangelical feminist movement’s push for equal authority in the home and in the church. The church has a role to play here, but if it follows the culture and encourages men and women to determine their own gender identities, thus giving up the norms set forth in Scripture, how can it speak to these issues in the secular world?
