In the two stanzas of the poem, Billy Collins portrays a sense of resentment and a hint of disparity. He talks about how ‘they’ (which we can cleverly guess he is referring to students from the poem), do not appreciate and enjoy reading poetry. ‘They’ are very impatient and hasty and thus are unable to digest and analyse it. The students are not able to understand the beauty of the poem. The poet effectively uses imagery and personification to convey this message. He gives the poem ‘person-like’ qualities in ‘tie the poem to a chair with a rope’, ‘torture a confession out of it’ and ‘They begin beating it with a hose’. He describes the poem as being subjected to torment. This evokes a sense of sympathy and pity in us as we are able to imagine the poem being tortured. The word ‘tie’, ‘tortured and ‘beating’ makes us feel trapped, stuck, hurt and perhaps even anger. The poet is warning us that our society is slowly turning into one that does not really care and not able to acknowledge the beauty of art and culture. He wants us to be the change.
