Include Animal Welfare in Foreign Trade Agreements! Foreign trade agreements have historically put agricultural profits above everything else. Unfortunately this has come at the cost of animal welfare. The newest agreement -- the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) -- is designed to expand the EU and US agricultural markets. However, the agreement completely disregards animal welfare. Beef, pork, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from sentient animals that can experience pain and suffering. Treating them like commodities is not acceptable. If the TTIP is not reformed, products from farms that continue to employ inhumane confinement practices will be allowed to compete with high welfare EU products. It will completely ignore the fact that the EU citizens have emphatically expressed support for banning inhumane farming practices. As written, the TTIP overshadows the spirit of fair trade and good welfare practices. Urge the decision-makers to reform the TTIP before the EU animal welfare standards are compromised.
