Incredibly petty rant of the day: If you say AN historic - TopicsExpress

Incredibly petty rant of the day: If you say AN historic instead of A historic, you are wrong. Wrong. Stop trying to argue. You are wrong. I dont care how smug it makes you feel - it is grammatically wrong. The belief that you should say An historic derives from people reading 19th century literature, where it is written thus. However at the time, most H words were pronounced with a silent H, so an was appropriate. By the early 20th century the voiced H had returned, and thus the an should be replaced by a. However a bunch of insecure people read their Dickens and Austen novels and mistakenly believed that was how it should be pronounced. So stop it. If you hear someone else do it, laugh derisively at them for their ignorance of proper grammar.
