Independence Day. Nigerias 54th celebration. Its 923,768 sq.km of landmass is wonderfully loaded with minerals - oil, coal, tin, gold, bauxite, iron ore and tons of others. It is richly blessed with sweet waters of mighty rivers, lakes and streams. Its soil is fertile and herbs and trees grow luxuriantly from the impenetrable thickets of the south to the open Savannah of the north. The sun shines, the rain waters and the moon gleams over the land. The birds of the air, the fish of the waters and the animals of the land are in abundance. This Garden of Eden has an estimated 170 million people who are strong, intelligent, vigorous and entrepreneurial. They have lovely languages, engaging cultures and the most sumptuous of foods. But there is extreme poverty in the land. There is hatred and violence with the blood of millions of innocents crying to God. There is massive religious rivalry and strife in the name of God Almighty who is merciful and compassionate. Its social and infrastructural services - health, water and power supply, housing, roads and many others are decrepit. There is mutual suspicion, distrust and fear among the people. Why is it that God gave so abundantly to this land and man makes the life on the land so harsh and unbearable for the great majority of the people? It is lack of fear of God. It is the wanton desecration of Gods commandments and ordinances. It is the mockery of God Almighty in churches and mosques and homes. It is the evil definition of stealing and lawlessness as smart and sharp. It is leaders who are steep in idolatry, greed and corruption with followers lusting for unearned rent. This is a nation so blessed, so endowed by nature that no man should be hungry. But it is beset by many woes. The solution is simple. Fear God, abide by His ways and be holy as He is holy (I Peter 1:16). Submit to God and the devil which has taken hold of the people shall flee (James 4:7-12). Remember that all your machinations, unbridled greed, lust for power and money is nothing for the scriptures say: For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (James 4:14.) The Preacher said: Vanity upon vanities; all is vanity. (Ecclesiastes 1:2.) And Jesus said love thy neighbour as thy self and give to the poor that you might have treasures in Heaven (Luke 18:22). May we use the occasion of this Independence Day celebration to remove the hardness of our hearts and the blindness of our eyes, so that we follow Gods words and come to enjoy peace beyond understanding here on earth and have wonderful treasures awaiting us when we die. Let us kill the ME mentality and work for neighbour, community and the nation through Gods love. In Jesus name I have prayed. Amen.
