India of 21st Century talks of gender equality quite often. I - TopicsExpress

India of 21st Century talks of gender equality quite often. I havent ever got an opportunity to attend marriages other than Punjabi weddings. One thing that I still wonder is- why most of the times it is the brides family that sponsors the wedding? What irritates me the most is that on one hand women talk of equality and on the other hand they not only buy lehengas beyond a lakh rupees but happily accept the lavish dowry their parents give them in the name of gifts. Another irritating feature is the milni part where it is thought to be the duty of brides parents to give gifts to close relatives of the bridegroom. Why gifts are to be given only by the brides family? Isnt it the bridegrooms marriage as well? Are bridegrooms and their families(including relatives) only supposed to act as recipients? These, and many more questions haunt me whenever I attend marriages of my close ones. The last thing that haunts me is- I dont see many brides of my generation objecting it. I dont see many brides of my generation asking the boys family to spend equally on the wedding or the minus/cut the milni part. Horror! Horror!
