Co written by lyricist Keith Reid, singer songwriter Gary Brooker and organist Matthew Fisher, its opening Bach inspired organ line is possibly the most moving and recognizable song introduction of all time. The song was first conceived in the mind of Keith Reid when he overheard someone at a party say to a woman, “You’ve turned a whiter shade of pale.” Reid referred to the effect that phrase had on him as the “jigsaw piece” around which he would construct his story. At that point in his life Reid was very taken with the Surrealist Art of Magritte and Dali and was extremely influenced by Bob Dylan’s wizardry with words. The song, in that sense, was as much about using colorful imagery to provide an atmosphere half based in reality as it was in telling a tale with open ended meanings. Critical interpretations of the song have been wildly divergent. Some claim it is a direct reference to a drug experience and others have viewed as a description of life into death. According to Reid, who for the most part has remained purposefully abstract, the song is about “...a relationship. Theres characters and theres a location, and theres a journey. You get the sound of the room and the feel of the room and the smell of the room. But certainly theres a journey going on, its not a collection of lines just stuck together. Its got a thread running through it. By relying heavily on phrases related to the sea and mixing it with ghostly supernatural imagery, Procol Harum was able to create an intensely seductive underwater nightmare. This mix of beauty with horror is directly responsible for much of the songs boundless dynamism. The musical presentation of this sordid reverie is nothing short of pure genius. From Fisher’s monumental organ lines to Brooker’s soulful and intuitive vocal presentation, the music is an aural gold mine that pulls at the heart while the lyrics ignite the imagination. We skipped the light fandango...Turned cartwheels cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick but the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink the waiter brought a tray And so it was that later as the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale She said, There is no reason and the truth is plain to see. But I wandered through my playing cards and they would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open wide..They might have just as well been closed And so it was that later as the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale She said, Im here on a shore leave, Though we were miles at sea. I pointed out this detail and forced her to agree, Saying, You must be the mermaid who took King Neptune for a ride. And she smiled at me so sweetly that my anger straightway died. And so it was that later as the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale If music be the food of love then laughter is its queen And likewise if behind is in front then dirt in truth is clean My mouth by then like cardboard seemed to slip straight through my head So we crash-dived straight away quickly and attacked the ocean bed And so it was that later as the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale. https://youtube/watch?v=Mb3iPP-tHdA
