Information for tomorrows seminar with Donnie Mather from the U.S. Please pass along to your fırst and second year classmates. All other students are welcome to observe. Please wear clothing that is comfortable for physical activity. Nothing too loose or too tight. We will work in bare feet, but please bring a pair of socks with you in case we have time for Suzuki Training. Please arrive on time and dressed and ready to work when we begin. We will plan on taking a 10 minute break during the 3 hour session. Please expect to work for the entire time and plan to take the bathroom break at the same time with everyone. This workshop will focus primarily on the Viewpoints Training and will also cover the subject of the Suzuki Training. Both techniques are considered to be physical approaches to actor training. This rigorous work seeks to develop a strong ensemble as well as a visceral body and voice connection. The Viewpoints: This technique was first articulated by Choreographer Mary Overlie and later adapted for the stage by Director Anne Bogart and members of the SITI Company. The Viewpoints Training addresses issues of Time and Space through highly structured exercises and open improvisation. Performers expand their awareness through a unique physical vocabulary exploring the limits of theatre, movement, and music. Suzuki Training: The Suzuki Method for the Actor was created by Japanese Director Tadashi Suzuki and his company. The training is a physical and vocal discipline that combines traditional and innovative forms. Through a series of rigorous exercises, the performer addresses energy, breath and concentration. DONNIE MATHER has almost 20 years experience with Viewpoints and Suzuki Method, training primarily with Anne Bogart and the founding members of SITI Company where he was an Associate Artist for many years. His training also includes Master Classes with Tadashi Suzuki, Mary Overlie, and Tina Landau. As an instructor, he has taught at theatre programs and universities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and South America including New York University, Columbia University, University of Puerto Rico, Iberoamericano Festival de Teatro de Bogotá, Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, and with Cia. dos Atores in Brasil. Currently, Donnie is the Movement instructor at the Atlantic Theatre Conservatory founded by David Mamet. As an actor, his credits include “Trojan Women A Love Story”, “Uncle Vanya”, “Macbeth” and the recent premiere of “Fête de la Nuit”. With the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, “Antony & Cleopatra”, “The Comedy of Errors”, and “The Merchant of Venice”. With the SITI Company, “Seven Deadly Sins” and “Lilith” (New York City Opera), and the world premiere of “Nicholas & Alexandra” with Plácido Domingo at Los Angeles Opera (all directed by Anne Bogart). His original work includes “A Show of Force” (New York and U.S. tour, Festival de Teatro de Manizales) and “Kaddish (or The Key in the Window)” adapted from the poem by Allen Ginsberg. donniemather.blogspot.
