Initial impressions of the Spes heavy glove. Please bear in - TopicsExpress

Initial impressions of the Spes heavy glove. Please bear in mind that when I talk about Sparring Glove or Absolute Force gloves, I have quite old models and they may have been updated. I think the guys at Spes have really done their homework: Fit The gloves are bulky certainly, but they are made very well and (on my hands at least) the bifurcated fingers fit snugly. The level of padding seems to help thing, and a flat sew rather than pockets for your fingers. The thumb also fits snugly but due to a hared internal protection give a lack of tactile sensation that can make it feel as if you are not gripping the weapon properly. This is a momentary thing however and simply a case of training your mind to realise “no its fine you are holding something”. In a compromise between safety and taking a few minutes to acclimatise they made the right choice. The palmward edge of the thumb is one issue we will see about, its a little narrower than than my sparring gloves at the base, but feels more protective over all, with none of the separation worry that (early model) sparring gloves, and Absolute Force had (this may have changed in more recent models of those products). Also they put decent thick padding and what feels like an extra safety layer inside to mitigate any far edge shots. Materials. Very good, the leather palm and fingers is thick enough but supple, and the layers of padding between that back of the hand and plates is plentiful without being restrictive. The plastic plates are well sized and appear sturdy, how they will last we will find out, but we cracked them around and they seem fine, but hard plates GOOD. Dexterity. Good, not as free as the comfort fencing ones, but not far off, much better than I expected and better in my opinion than the S G an A F models. They feel right too and that counts for a lot. Overall. Very good, the hard external plates are very much the way to go, less gaps than the CF models, better thumbs than the SP and AF models, a reasonably high level of dexterity (again better than the AF and SG). And comfortable. Buy some.
