Inspiring IMO! Kings College Old Boys Association held its 105th Founder’s Day Lecture recently. The theme was on Education. Former Governor Peter Obi was asked to share his experience in Anambra state, Nigeria which has just recorded the best results in NECO (performance nationwide was under 40% pass). He said he had returned schools that were previously mission owned and that these schools run by Priests and Nuns, had shown more integrity in the application of funds allotted to them. In not so many words he said government schools were failing because of government officials…hnmmmm. Not likely to reinvent the wheel, I listened attentively. Given the same resources the mission schools had outdone the government schools by far. As a corollary to this, my previous research had shown that there is no shortage to policy documents. However these policy documents were either shoddily implemented (like giving a child a fork to eat caviar), or wholesale discarded (when it hit a perceived pothole). The challenge in most cases were political; between legislators and the executive, between policy and the people. Insufficient buy-in. Hence there is no continuity from one government to another. Today where is MAMSER?, NEEDS 1?, NEEDS 2? etc. The challenge for me therefore is not just crafting good policy but getting everyone to own it and so implement it. This is hard work given our numerous issues. Winning the election is the easy part, getting the PEOPLE to cooperate with you to achieve the vision is another thing entirely. How do we get our people to forsake the old and embrace a new way of doing things? How do we INSPIRE them so we can achieve a multiplier effect in governance, letting it sink that they no longer need to beat the system but they can cooperate with the system to achieve more. When elected, we will do the basic….roads, houses, schools, healthcare. It is a GIVEN. However, I believe that the greatest legacy of my government will be the changed mindset of our people. I.M.O…..building an INSPIRED IMO! Ndi Imo..ahurum unu n’anya. ifeyinwaokafor
