Interesting day ahead. A young woman who is a junior at my alma mater Williams College in Massachusetts is visiting a friend at UT in Austin. She had contacted me last year, expressing an interest in pursuing a career in the music business. We have corresponded some, and I was able to connect her with songwriting pal Bernice Lewis, who just so happens to offer a course in songwriting at Williams - and is one helluva woman. So today I will drive in to meet one Katey Preston for lunch - probably at Threadgills Old No. 1 to give her an historical jump-off point for Austin music. Then over to KLRU 6th floor to the old sound stage for Austin City Limits, where old pal David Hough, long-time engineer for the series, will take a break from a mixing/sweetening session to give us a personal tour. Then I am to drop her off at Barton Springs to connect back up with her friend. I had a personal relationship with Kenneth Threadgill and played with him often. I was there from the early days of Armadillo World Headquarters and on the night we closed - the next day we all went to Eddie Wilsons newly remodeled Threadgills for supper. I emceed the pilot show at the Armadillo with Billy Joe Shaver, Michael Murphy and Willie Nelson that became Austin City Limits. My band Balcones Fault appeared for the second show of the second season of Austin City Limits. So it all comes around, and I am pleased to share my personal witness of history with this eager young person, for whom the music business will bear little resemblance to the one I have known.
