Interesting info from someone working in the media who wishes to stay anonymous The ABC & SBS are the only channels to run positive indigenous stories because they dont have a media relationship with the police. Mainstream media relies on the police to pass information to them about newsworthy stories to make the news interesting so they can sell ad space. The relationship is mutually beneficial, the police expect positive coverage so when they request a helicopter from the state government commercial tv will run stories about the need for a chopper, in return media corporations get extensive access to interesting cases to put on in primetime. So covering a death in police custody which raises the police services possible contravention of the recommendations from the royal commission into aboriginal deaths in custody with out the story being sanatised to serve the interests and reputation of the police service will not happen, therefore there will be either a delay in coverage between event and news item so everyone can get their story straight, the story will be brief and hidden amongst the headlines, or the story wont be run at all. We dont have a free commercial media here, the government and media are in bed together in this country to broadcast their mutually beneficial agenda.
