Interesting post by mark welch on bufc forum : Guys, Ive returned to the Oval to see if I could assist with the wet area causing so much concern. I have done what I thought is correct and redirected a drainage pipe closer to the pitch perimeter. By doing this I have unearthed a drainage pipe running down the pitch which is damaged 20 yards inside the park end bar line. My theory on this is almost certainly pointing at the 32 tonne cranes path (used to take down the old floodlights pylons) several years ago. Coincidently, this is when we started to see a difference in this area, and annually got worse since. I would suggest investigation work at the point of damage although this does mean digging a hole on the pitch. I would also continue to run this trench another 20 yards as I feel you may well uncover another drainage pipe which may also be blocked. Doing this you would be able to get rid of the water back-up, and divert the water around the pitch (as done on this occasion) relieving the et area further. The trench should be filled with stone and topped with soil/turf. Glad to be of assistance, and best of luck.
