International Air And Surface Search Underway For Overdue Skiff From Chuuk CHUUK, FSM (Pacific News Center, March 17, 2014) — Multiple resources from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Australia the U.S. and commercial mariners are searching for an overdue 19 foot skiff with two persons on board. The skiff departed Chuuk on Thursday, 13 March. During the evening of March 14th, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam received a report of the overdue skiff that went out for a day of fishing in the vicinity of the Chuuk Atoll. Chuuk Atoll is approximately 540 nautical miles south east of Guam. Assisting in the search are five “Good Samaritan” commercial ships, one U.S. Coast Guard C-130 aircraft from Barbers Point, Hawaii, one U.S. Navy P-3 aircraft from Okinawa, Japan, one Australian P-3 aircraft, and the Patrol Boat FSS Micronesia from Pohnpei, FSM. The two P-3’s and the patrol boat were diverted from Operation Rai Balong. Operation Rai Balong is a bilateral regional maritime surveillance operation that targets illegal fishing. So far a total of 5300 square nautical miles have been covered since the skiff went missing. U.S. Coast Guard C-130, Navy P-3, Australian P-3 and the FSS Micronesia continue searches west and north west of Chuuk Atoll.
