Into the Black by Matthew G. Sallack After turkey slumbers, and mash-potato dreams, we set out to snag a 60-inch screen. A 40-gig iPod, an iPad as well. We shop and we spend as if under a spell. Camping outside and in line for days, for Doorbuster Deals on end-cap displays. We flip through the ads to find deep discounts. We get thrown into stores, and like rubber balls, bounce. We venture out into retail, leave the comfort of home, preparing for combat, like gladiators of Rome, fighting for items on a Christmas wish list. Miss out, and we leave empty-handed and pissed. Its Tickle-Me-Elmo, all over again. All the things we endure to please someone whos 10. Or even ourselves, that self-satisfaction from a perfect purchase, a terrific transaction. Racking up miles on frequent-flyer credit. No interest financing, just swipe and forget it. We go into the black, in more ways than one, Shopping, not stopping until the day has been won. -dedicated to anyone who has to work retail today
