Introducing the birth of this project which began in 2011, seeking information about the history of my family. Sharing some information I have gathered about the ‘Bhana Family’. The Bhana Family relocated from Johannesburg to Actonville in 1964. That same year Narotum and Laxmi Bhana opened up a family business which was known as ‘Benoni Tailors’ on Singh Street in Actonville. Opening up a tailor shop was common during that time because one did not need a license to open up such a shop. When business opportunities expanded between 1979-1990, ‘Benoni Tailors’ changed to ‘Benoni Tailors and Outfitters’, which was further expanded into a spice shop called ‘Bhana’s Spice’, with the tailor shop still operating at that time. In 2006 Narotum Bhana got ill and passed away that same year. ‘Bhana Spice’ carried on operating and is still in existence till today, which is now owned and managed by their youngest daughter Pravina Jivan.
