This study begins an examination of the ways that these clubs sustain and shape participation in activities, recreation settings, and understandings of place across urban, rural, and wilderness landscapes in Northern British Columbia. In addition, the study will refine approaches and methods for researching this dynamic. Based on the initial findings, partnerships, and publications resulting from of this pilot study, funding will be sought through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to expand both the depth and the scope of this study across numerous activities, seasons, and regional populations. How You Were Selected & What You Are Asked to Do You were selected as a result of your involvement with the recreation club and the email address you have supplied to them. If you decide to participate in the survey, we invite you to respond to a set of questions about your participation with the recreation club. Confidentiality and Anonymity No names or identifying information will be included in the dissemination of the interview results. Code numbers will be used on the interview records to protect your identity. Your name will only appear on the consent forms, which will be kept separate from the surveys in a locked filing cabinet or password protected hard drive in a locked research office that is accessible only to Philip Mullins. Any data that is entered into a computer will be encrypted, password protected, and also stored in a secure office. As a token of our appreciation, if you choose to participate you can enter a draw for a $50 gift certificate to a local outdoors store. You may select whether or not you would like to have your name publicly announced as the winner; your responses will remain confidential and will not be associated with your name. Right to Decline or Withdraw Your participation is completely voluntary and you may choose to withdraw at any time during the study without penalty of any kind. If you decide to withdraw at any point before the study is complete, the information that you have provided thus far will be destroyed. Disposal of Data All data will be kept in a secure location (with interview records kept separate from personal information) for five years after the completion of the study. The data will then be destroyed by shredding interview records and consent forms, and by deleting all computerized data files (including information on electronic storage devices). Potential Risks There are no known or anticipated risks to you by participating in this research. Dissemination of Results Once the study is complete, a report will be produced. Any information that you offer in terms of your responses in the interviews or on the surveys will be summarized in the study’s report, and therefore, your responses will be kept anonymous and will not be personally identifiable. At the end of the study, a final report of the findings will be produced and made available to all participants. The final report will also be submitted to peer-reviewed journals for publication. Debriefing At the end of the study, participants can request a copy of the final research report by contacting Philip Mullins at (250) 960-5509 or via email at [email protected]).
