Invitation to our Kagami Biraki... Kagami Biraki (鏡開き) is a Japanese traditional ceremony which literally translates to Opening the Mirror. But more-so, it is an opportunity to open our eyes to a fresh new reflection of ourselves. The opening or rather re-opening of the mirror represents our re-commitment to see ourselves clearly for who we are in this moment. The annual ceremony is our celebration of our renewed commitment to training and growing with a positive attitude. The ceremony traditionally takes place in Japan between the 11th an 15th of January. This is not to be confused with the first training session of the year that is referred to as Keiko Hajime or Hatsu Geiko. Even though dojo members may have already returned to the dojo to train sooner after the first of the year, the official proclamation and Kagami Biraki is not done until later in the month. These two types of events should not be confused with one another. Here at the KNBK hombu we will celebrate Kagami Biraki on Saturday, January 10th beginning around 9:00 AM. The mirror of the Kamidana will be re-exposed and reflect our renewed determination do continue our quest for hard training and to be better able to view ourselves through our training and experiences. To represent the breaking or rather reopening of the mirror, we will break Mochi or rice cakes and share in the celebration together. Well have green tea, Mochi, Miso Soup, Rice and other traditional Japanese fare. We welcome all of our friends and fellow budoka to stop by and take part in the festivity of the morning and join us in recommitting ourselves to further growth and reflection. We hope to see you here ! Below: Some photos from last years event...
