Iraqi security leaders and tribesmen are working on several fronts to prevent al-Qaeda from seizing control of areas near the Syrian border, officials told Mawtani. Al-Qaeda seeks to gain control of border towns in order to establish a safe haven and a base from which to launch attacks, Minister of Defence Saadoun al-Dulaimi told Mawtani. ... Attacks on villages and towns near Iraqs western border are motivated by the areas strategic location and the nature of the desert terrain, the vast expanse of the area, and the ease with which they can hide in it, al-Dulaimi said. In response, the Iraqi army has ramped up security along the Iraq-Syria border and recently blocked attempts by al-Qaeda to overrun Rawah, Anah, Akashat and border villages in al-Qaim district, he said.
