Irish week 2. Looking back over some of my concerns going into Michigan week I would say it was a split on the good and bad. The good… Special teams. Brindza look solid in both FG’s and kickoffs. The RB’s. Amir Carlise looked good running strong between the tackles. Had the Irish not gotten down early I think this would have been a much bigger upside. GA3 needs to catch the freaking ball out of the backfield though.. dropped 3 that I can remember. The Bad… Tommy Reese. 2 INT’s. Both on 1st down. Both when he was under no pressure. Something that you just can’t have from a senior QB.. but he is what he is. The Defense – well they gave up 41 points… that should be enough said. LB’s are slow, Gardner is fast and has an arm... #5 is missed more than I thought he would be. Also ND went with a blitzing D for this game rather than the bend but don’t break that they used all last year. The plan I would imagine was to get pressure on Gardner and make him uncomfortable… and to maybe put more pressure on a young Michigan O-Line. It worked at times but not nearly enough. Plus Michigan’s game plan was make quick drops and not allow ND’s D line make a difference… so it worked and well… worked… ball was out fast… and when they missed him on the blitz Gardner was off to the races. The Ugly… declining a holding penalty on Michigan that would have made it a 2 and 18… instead 3rd and 8 and gardner gets flushed and runs for the 8 yards…drive results in a touchdown.. ???? still scratching my head on this one. All in all another great game to watch. The Irish came up a little short when it was all said and done but the better team won that day. Only one more game in the storied rivalry… sad to see it go. Next week the Irish drive down the road to Purdue. I will be watching that one while eating some Crawfish and drinking a Hurricane!!!! New Orleans here we come.
