Ironing Days I have another very young memory. I was probably 4 years old. Mother had an older sister that lived in north Austin. Her name was Lorene, but everyone called her Rene. She was the mother in law of Frank Hinds and grandmother to David Hinds. Of course this was well before they either entered the picture. We lived in Jollyville. The sisters, besides being sisters they were very good friends. Often after my mother would get Kenny off to school, she would load me in the car, a couple of clothes baskets full of wrinkled clothes, along with her iron and iron board and head for her sisters. There they would spend the day each standing ironing while visiting and watching soap operas. That is an activity that was replayed all over the country in those days I bet. I would be right under their feet all day, being the only child there. One day I went in the bathroom and proceeded to getting busy. My memory began when the door flew open and two disgusted women were standing there. I had set in the floor and started pulling up the linoleum tiles and stacked them up. It was a new little tract house on a new street, so Im sure the tile hadnt been properly laid or I wouldnt have been able to get them up. They always said, when they couldnt see me and things got quite, something destructive was happening. Which was often. Those 2 were very glad when it was my time to start to school. They could finally have their ironing days and enjoy each other.
