Is Bangladesh one of the least charitable countries? This is a report from 2010: The World Giving Index - published by the Charities Aid foundation - used Gallup surveys of 195,000 people in 153 nations, and asked people whether they had given money to charity or volunteered or helped a stranger in the last month. It also asked respondents to rank how happy they are with life. Only 5% of the surveyed people in Bangladesh volunteered for an organization (the number is 39% in the USA, 58% in Sri Lanka), only 12% give money to charities (77% in the Netherlands, 35% in Afghanistan), 29% said they helped a stranger in the last month (Canada 68%, Sierra Leone 75%). In the overall Giving Index, all countries in South Asia performed dismally except for brilliant Sri Lanka. Top: Australia 57% (Giving Index) USA 55% Sri Lanka 53% 9th position Afganistan (38%) Nepal (26%) India (19%) Pakistan (16%) Bangladesh (15%) If there is any solace, China had an index of 14% and Russia 18%.
