Is it necessary to sustain a large, battle-ready military during - TopicsExpress

Is it necessary to sustain a large, battle-ready military during peacetime? Do you find the old maxim, Si vis pacem, para bellum convincing or should nations accelerate military development as and when it becomes necessary, pursuing vast, cost-saving mothballing and decommissioning programs in the meantime on a scale perhaps much larger even than that which occurred at the end of WWII? I feel a bit torn on this question, between maintaining readiness in case the Pax Americana breaks down in the same way the Pax Britannia did, but also the possibility that we could be pissing away untold sums of money readying ourselves for a threat that may not materialize even in this century, especially if the end of history thesis turns out to more or less hold true.
