Is it sad that I was laughing by the end of this article? I mean, I read it, and all I could think at the end is, No Shit. One of the most challenging problems educators face happen when politicians get involved in the classroom. But heres why. In the case of Common Core, they came up with standards using several experts, then were shocked when, upon implementation, it didnt work well because the curriculum to support it wasnt in place. Texas just went through this with STAAR. The test comes out and the teachers were not given much from the state to teach the kids. The politicians rush the assessment out because they have elections. The result is that we have to build the curriculum on the fly. Now were judging assessments before weve had time to implement adequate curriculum. This means that its hard to give honest feedback because everyone is demanding higher test scores so any criticism of the test sounds like someone making excuses for low test scores. Isnt this backwards? Shouldnt the tests be previewed three to four years out, allow the teachers to develop the curriculum, and then release it? Create sample tests that teachers can see and use years in advance. Let us know what the goal is. And then, and this is important, dont move the goalposts on us at the last minute. npr.org/blogs/ed/2014/12/29/371918272/the-man-behind-common-core-math
