Is my ‘Hijaab’ compromising my Modesty? The Reflections of a Muslimah: Part one(By a sister in Islam) The glitz and the glam of modern day fashion are as tempting as the‘forbidden fruit’. It is almost impossible as a muslimah, not to be lured bythe variant colours, odd yet amazing shapes, superb textures and glamorouscuts of fashion. Therefore the concept of Hijab fashion came to the fore. Hijaab fashion is meant at giving young muslimahs a way to still look goodwithin the confines of Shariah. Hence, boxlike square scarves with thicklace were replaced with sheer lace scarves in beautiful colours and designsand the like. Previously I thought it was the most incredible innovation and will attractmany young girls- which it undoubtedly did. It is not an uncommon site inmalls or public places, women clad with Hijab in every colour on thisplanet. Even non Muslims are pretty much amazed by these striking andgorgeous representatives of faith and modesty. There are many women who left the pin- straight GHD hair, to adopt a scarfwhen funky and beautiful scarves hit the market. I actually admire women whomade that step as wearing a scarf can be a mammoth task for some. What started to eek me out recently is that in the name of hijab fashion weare totally opposing every rule of Hijaab or modesty. Scarves are gettingsmaller and more transparent. Showing off hair has become part of the ‘Hijabstatement’ and our Abayas have become more like evening dresses. And it does not stop there. Niqaabs have also been transformed by this revolution to an extent the sizeis shrinking (definitely not a shortage of fabric). Oh, and if you think aNiqaab that barely fits the face is bad, wait till you see the new ‘trendy’transparent Niqaabs’. You heard me! ‘Soft and light for the face’ is the lie we are made tobelieve. Lest you stand under a mean old florescent light and everyintention of modesty is thrown out the window. I now believe that the evolution of Hijaab has defeated its core objective. Allah Says in the Quraan; “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity of them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that theyshould lower their gaze and guard their modesty: they should not displaytheir ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty….”
