Is there a thing of having too many crucifixes? This last Sunday, - TopicsExpress

Is there a thing of having too many crucifixes? This last Sunday, we visited a mission in northern New Mexico that was about 200 years old. The parking lot was completely surrounded with 5 foot crucifixes. It gave me an eerie feeling and flashbacks of what roads leading to Rome lined with bodies on crucifixes would have looked like. This may have hit me different than the average person as there are times in my life when I have flashbacks of living in those times as a Roman soldier. (This I probably should have left out.) As we walked a short ways from the parking lot to the church, about 200 feet, the fence next to the sidewalk was so full or rosaries light could not pass between them. The thought of pain and suffering was so intense for those who died on the cross and the symbolic nature of those who proudly display their faith in Christ on a necklace filled my thoughts and heart. The agony of and suffering began to overcome my heart more and more as we walked through areas of vivid sculptures of Christ being crucified. As I struggle with my own faith, I do understand the symbolic representation of wearing the cross on a necklace to represent the belief Christ dying for one’s sins. My mind begins to ponder the thought if Christ was killed in modern times by guillotine, electric chair, or any modern forms of execution would individuals wear a necklace of that device? Is wearing the cross glorifying the manner in which so many individuals died a horrible death? Wouldn’t a necklace of a candle flame still signify their belief in God?
