Islamic Republic of Mauritania whose capital is Nouakchott town is conducting its presidential elections today the June 21st. The incumbent, President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz came to power through a military coup detat on August 6th 2008 but organised elections a year later that somewhat legitimised his rule. The polls are interesting because whoever wins continues being AU Chairman till 2015 January, a position currently held by Islamic Republic of Mauritania through President Aziz. President Aziz is facing four other presidential candidates in the first round; Mrs Lalla Mariem Mint Moulaye Idriss, Mr Boidiel Ould Houmeid, Mr Ibrahima Moctar Sarr and anti-slavery activist Mr Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid. With an estimated population of 4 million, among concerns by international players on Mauritania include fight against terrorism, human rights abuses and practising of modern-day slavery; though it is expected President Aziz will retain his seat.
