Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior — accessible only - TopicsExpress

Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior — accessible only by ferry or seaplane — and Keweenaw National Historic Park, which stretches across several historical copper mining sites in the Upper Peninsula, were among the dozens of parks Republican Sen. Tom Coburn criticized as either inaccessible or created just to satisfy political desires. Coburn’s 208-page report, titled “Parked: How Congress’ Misplaced Priorities Are Trashing Our National Treasures,” sets out to show that an $11.5-billion maintenance backlog has been caused, in part, by a refusal to “ensure that those parks and memorials with true national significance are given the care they deserve.” ... “Preserving natural treasures, including our wilderness areas and our important cultural legacies, isn’t a mistake,” said U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. “It’s right at the heart of our national park system’s mission and of who we are as a people.” The Detroit lawmaker called Coburn’s suggestion that the two aren’t worthy of preservation “way off target.” Oklahoma senator calls 2 Michigan landmark parks among most wasteful U.S. expenses Todd Spangler, Detroit Free Press. 30 Oct 2013 freep/article/20131030/NEWS06/310300024/Senator-targets-2-Michigan-parks-among-most-wasteful-U-S-expenses
