Issued By: VITEMA Affected Jurisdictions: St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Water Island Counties Headline: VITEMA Closely Monitoring Tropical Storm Chantal; Chantal to Pass South of the Virgin Islands Late Tuesday Night VITEMA is tracking Tropical Storm Chantal, which is forecasted to pass south of the Virgin Islands late on Tuesday night. At 8 a.m. today, the center of Tropical Storm Chantal was located 10.6 degrees north 50.6 degrees west. The system is rapidly moving westward at 26 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of at 40 miles per hour with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend out up to 60 miles from the center. On its forecast track, the center of Tropical Storm Chantal should pass between 145 and 150 miles to the south of St. Croix on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning with sustained winds of 60 to 65 miles per hour near the center. A tropical storm warning has been issued for Barbados, Dominica, St. Lucia, Guadeloupe and Martinique. A tropical storm watch is in effect for St. Vincent. No watch or warning has been issued for the US Virgin Islands. VITEMA urges the public to remain vigilant and to continue monitoring this system. A storm can shift at any time putting it closer to the Territory than forecasted. VITEMA also urges everyone to use this opportunity to reassess their readiness for the 2013 hurricane season.
