It Is Music WHAT SET US APART From Other Species Our genes are not much different from most of other animals. They are not even way more numerous than those found in other animal species. So, where most of the differences between different species comes from ? Lets use this metaphor. Suppose that all genes that produce proteins, less then 2% of the total human genomic DNA are the different instruments of a big orchestra. Most of these instruments are quite similar in most animals. But what about the biggest part of the genomic DNA ( more than 98% ) that do not produce proteins ? It has countless of regulatory sequences that control, between many things, what instruments ( genes ) will play or not, the volume of their sound ( speed of transcription [ RNA production ] and the speed of translation [ protein production ], when they will play and how long they will play. So the 98% of the DNA contains the music that the 2% of protein-coding DNA should play in each species. It is music what mostly sets apart one species from another. However, probably the proportion of about 98 to 2 is not equal in all animals. medicalxpress/news/2014-07-team-size-human-genome-genes.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_genome EF
