General John T Wilder, Army of the Cumberland, reflecting on the Battle of Chickamauga, when he mounted brigade, equipped with seven shot repeater carbines, waited for a Rebel column to emerge into a clearing flanked by a large ditch. It quickly turned into a killing field.
