It all comes down to this! The games have begun and the NSW sprinters dominated the athletics meet with our Loftus TAFE teacher and Coach Michael Dooley’s athletes at the forefront. Three of his athletes, Jarrod Geddes, Jake Hammond and Ella Nelson, were undefeated by other Australians on the night. Jarrod Geddes delivered undoubtedly the leading NSW performance on Saturday night was a 20.59 200m. Just beaten on the line by South African Simon Magakwe, Geddes clocked a Commonwealth Games B qualifier and recorded the fastest 200m time by an Aussie for four years. Jake Hammond also sliced 0.07 seconds from his best, clocking 10.38 seconds. Hammond, 22, a very talented junior, has been a measure of patience over the last few years as he battled niggles at the wrong time, but things have finally turned the corner for him and his coach. Yet another Dooley-coached athlete Ella Nelson comfortably won the 200m in a slightly wind assisted 23.36. It continues her tremendous season that has witnessed two Commonwealth Games B qualifiers. Hammond, 22, and Nelson, 20, have been training together for several years and Glasgow 2014 marks their Games debut. The pair started in Little Athletics at Sutherland when they were six and went on to study Health and Recreation at Loftus TAFE campus. Nelson is running in the 200 metres and the womens 4 x 100m metres relay; Hammond is competing in the mens 4 x 100m relay. In Little Athletics, Hammond ran for Engadine and Nelson for Heathcote at Sutherland Oval. Hammond left Engadine in the under-13s to run for Port Hacking Little Athletics Club, where he began training under Dooley. At the completion of Little Athletics, Hammond and Nelson joined Illawong Athletics Club. They represented Australia in 2010 in the World Junior Championships in Canada and this years World Relay Championships in May in the Bahamas. Big things in store for these budding athletes. We are very proud to call them home grown Sydney TAFE graduates and wish them the best of luck in the games! Sourced from The Leader.
